The Bloody Chamber and Other Stories is an astonishing collection from a virtuoso writer. Angela Carter’s masterly reworking of ‘Bluebeard’s Castle’, a bawdy ‘Puss in Boots’ and a startling version of ‘Little Red Riding Hood’ are all darkly sensual, subversive takes on traditional fairy stories, as shocking today as when the collection first appeared in 1979. These are Gothic tales, cruel tales, tales of wonder, tales of terror, fabulous narratives that deal directly with the imagery of the unconscious, with narratives suggested by traditional Western European fairy tales.

‘I ran to the telephone; and the line, of course, was dead. Dead as his wives…’

To her readers’ delight, Carter found she had conjured up an exotic new hybrid: ‘My intention was not to do “versions” or, as the American edition of the book said, horribly, “adult” fairy tales, but to extract the latent content from the traditional stories.’
The 1970s were a low point for fairy tales – they were considered old-fashioned, elitist and anti-feminist, among other perceived crimes. But in 1979 the audacious Angela Carter turned the situation on its head, bringing out the power, drama and attractive darkness of the original tales. As introducer Marina Warner – a friend of the author – puts it, she ‘soaked them in a new fiery liquor that brought them leaping back to life’.
