with photographs by the author

‘A decidedly purposeful adventurer. Among the most popular travel writers of her time, she was as observant as she was courageous, and often very funny.’

The first woman to be awarded the Honorary Fellowship of the Royal Geographical Society, Isabella Bird was the most remarkable female traveller of the nineteenth century. Famed for extraordinary journeys which would be impressive even by today’s standards, her expeditions culminated, aged 65, in a seven-month solo exploration along the Yangtze river in China in 1896. Journeying from Shanghai to Somo, Bird completed much of the expedition in a traditional junk, sharing the same hardships that beset her hired crew, and her no-holds-barred account of this groundbreaking voyage remains unsurpassed to this day.

The Yangtze Valley and Beyond is an empathetic and observational account. From the widespread use of opium pipes to foot binding among young women, Bird wrote frankly about her experiences and provided a glimpse into the lives of people in remote villages as yet untouched by the West.

This new Folio edition features over 100 of Isabella Bird’s own photographs, including some previously unpublished. The selection was sourced from the archives of original pictures, plates and lantern slides held by theRoyal GeographicalSociety and National Library of Scotland. First developed by Bird on the bobbing houseboat and washed in the Yangtze river itself, the images have been painstakingly reproduced by Folio.

Writer and adventurer Dervla Murphy introduces the book with a biographical account of Isabella Bird’s extraordinary life. The original map charting Bird’s route across the Yangtze basin has been beautifully reproduced in a larger, fold-out scale for this new edition and is presented in a corner pocket at the rear of the book.
