Written in 1922, this touching tale of a cloth rabbit’s quest to become ‘Real’ is a much-loved masterpiece among children’s illustrated books. With a nostalgic nod to the fairy-tale tradition and the inspiration for many fantastical tales about talking toys, it remains a bedtime favourite almost 100 years later.

William Nicholson’s artwork is as memorable as the story. To ensure a faithful reproduction The Folio Society worked closely with the artist’s grandson Desmond Banks from the outset, individually restoring Nicholson’s illustrations to the original splendour he approved for the first edition. This painstaking attention to detail has resulted in a truly beautiful and collectable book that will delight younger readers for generations to come.

From the vivid period endpapers of the first edition to the rose goldblocked slipcase featuring a design based on Nicholson’s beautiful endpaper pattern of rabbits, this edition is full of extraordinary details that make it truly unique. Exclusive to this Folio edition is a dedication from Nicholson to his daughter Penny; the page is reproduced from her personal copy and includes the pencil drawing he did to accompany it.

Two great names in children’s publishing bookend the classic tale: beloved author-illustrator Shirley Hughes considers Nicholson’s artistic contribution to the story in her impassioned introduction, while an afterword by distinguished Professor of Children’s Literature, Marilynn Strasser Olson, expands on the perfect symmetry between the story and the illustrations.
