C. S. Forester’s naval adventure comes to an end with The Folio Society’s spectacular three-volume set that completes the collection. Filled to the very last page with political intrigue, far-flung locations and, above all, thrilling adventures on the high seas, The Hornblower Set 3: Admiral Hornblower concludes the story of one of fiction’s most celebrated heroes.

In this final set, Hornblower achieves the very pinnacle of his career with missions that include foiling mutinies, tangling with Caribbean pirates and, of course, out-thinking the forces of the relentlessly ambitious Napoleon Bonaparte. The vast backdrop of the Napoleonic Wars transports the reader deep into this historical conflict, exploring all corners of the globe affected in a time of momentous upheaval.

A lifelong Hornblower devotee and bestselling historical novelist Bernard Cornwell provides a fond introduction to this collection. In his piece, Cornwell examines what it is about Hornblower that has kept readers entranced for decades.

Series artist Joe McLaren beautifully illustrates this final set, completing his work on all ten volumes. During this process McLaren consulted closely with former curator of Maritime History at the National Museum, Brian Lavery. 15 full-page illustrations and clever chapter head decorations capture all the heart and action of the Hornblower series whilst also remaining historically spot-on and evocative of the period.

In 1964, C. S. Forester published a selection of maps that charted Hornblower’s many far-flung voyages. Folio has reproduced the relevant maps at the start of each volume, giving the reader an unparalleled opportunity to explore Forester’s rich narrative.
