Press Release: The Book Illustration Competition 2020 Judging Panel Announced

The Book Illustration Competition 2020 Judging Panel Announced

The Folio Society and House of Illustration announce that Imtiaz Dharker will join the judging panel for the Book Illustration Competition 2020 (#BIC2020).

Award-winning poet, artist and film maker Imtiaz Dharker will be the guest judge for the Book Illustration Competition 2020. Dharker is editing a new selection of love poems for The Folio Society, which the winner of the competition will be commissioned to illustrate.

She will be joining five other judges on the panel: Sheri Gee, Art Director for The Folio Society; Colin McKenzie, Director of House of Illustration; Tom Walker, Publishing Director for The Folio Society; Olivia Ahmad, Curator of House of Illustration and 2019 competition winner Marie-Alice Harel.

Tom Walker said: ‘It’s such an honour to be able to work with Imtiaz Dharker on this new anthology. Her own poetry is deeply generous and honest, and as a visual artist herself she is superbly well placed to judge the illustrator submissions for this competition.’

Now in its tenth year, the Book Illustration Competition is a partnership between The Folio Society and House of Illustration. This year’s competition is open for entries until 17 January 2020. The annual international competition is open to student and professional illustrators over the age of 18, who have not been previously commissioned by The Folio Society. Details of how to enter are available from the House of Illustration website.

The winner of the competition will receive the commission worth £5,000 and will be revealed at an awards night at House of Illustration in March 2020. Additional prizes of £500 will be presented to the five shortlisted entries.

The selected long list, from which the judging panel will choose five shortlisted artists and the winner, will be available to view via the House of Illustration website from 14 February 2020. Members of the public are able to vote on the site for the People’s Choice Award, an additional prize which will be presented on the awards night alongside the shortlisted entries and the overall competition winner.

Love Poems edited by Imtiaz Dharker with illustrations by the winning artist will be published by The Folio Society on Valentines Day 2021.
