The Book Illustration Competition 2019 Open for Entries

The Folio Society and House of Illustration announce the 2019 Book Illustration Competition to illustrate ‘Howl’s Moving Castle’ by Diana Wynne Jones(#BIC2019).

The Book Illustration Competition (BIC) is now open, giving illustrators (both student and professional) the opportunity to win an exclusive commission from The Folio Society to illustrate Howl’s Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones.

A partnership between The Folio Society and House of Illustration, this year’s
competition closes on 8 January 2019.

Now in its ninth year, BIC 2019 asks entrants to create three illustrations and a binding design for this award-winning fantasy novel. Entrants are reminded that they must show their own unique vision in their entries and not be influenced by other adaptations of the book.

The longlist will be exhibited online in February 2019. The winner will be revealed at an exclusive ceremony at House of Illustration, receiving a prestigious commission from The Folio Society worth £5,000 to complete the illustrations for their edition. Five prizes of £500 each will be presented to the other shortlisted entries.

Art Director at The Folio Society and BIC Judge, Sheri Gee, said about this exciting new test for illustrators ‘With each year, with each different competition book there have been different challenges for the entrants. Many of the books have required accurate historical research by the illustrator, some books have required a futuristic outlook, others ghostly while others still required exquisite horse drawing. With Howl’s Moving Castle I look forward very much to seeing the response to fantasy! I’m excited to see what originality and ingenuity will be brought to this book.’

Since launching in 2009, the competition has become known for identifying and cultivating the best illustration talent in the UK and overseas. Last year German artist Max Löffler won the opportunity to illustrate The Folio Society edition of The Selected Adventures and Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes by Arthur Conan Doyle which will be published in October 2018.

Director of House of Illustration and fellow judge Colin McKenzie, said: ‘We are delighted to be launching the ninth Book Illustration Competition with The Folio Society which offers illustrators such an exciting career-changing opportunity; the new talent it has launched in previous years has been wonderful to see. We are particularly excited at this year’s choice of book; Howl’s Moving Castle is a really classic part of so many childhoods, and I can’t wait to see how entrants to the competition respond to the challenge of illustrating it.’

The annual international competition is open to illustrators over the age of 18, both student and professional, who have not been previously commissioned by The Folio Society. Illustrators should visit here to find all the necessary details to enter.
