‘A brilliant account of the passionate search for a brutal history in the process of being lost, forgotten and destroyed. It is a masterpiece of investigative analysis, written almost like a novel, with a perfect mix of compassion and distance.’
In 1989 the Berlin Wall fell; shortly afterwards the two Germanies reunited and East Germany ceased to exist. Several years later, in 1996, Anna Funder, working for a TV station in what was formerly West Berlin, meets Miriam Weber who tried to climb over the Wall aged sixteen and got caught. Imprisoned, interrogated and tortured, the Stasi came into Miriam’s life and never let her go. Miriam’s extraordinary story sets Funder on a search for others whose lives have been blighted by the old regime.
Stasiland uncovers the experiences of former residents of the GDR, from Stasi men who recall their work with ferocious pride, to citizens forced into ‘internal emigration’, and scarred by the Firm’s all-seeing machinations.
Atmospheric, quietly passionate and deeply attuned to the absurdities, tragedies and occasional humour of these startling stories, Funder’s research reads like a novel. Her narrative skilfully interweaves historical detail with eyewitness testimony, laying bare the brutal workings of ‘a regime structured as a pyramid of fear’.
