Hangman’s Holiday

Dorothy L. Sayers

Illustrated by Paul Cox

‘She brought to the detective novel originality, intelligence, energy and wit’
p. d. james

A well-dressed gentleman with a love of antiquarian books, cricket and fine wine: Lord Peter Wimsey does not sound the most daunting prospect for a hardened criminal, yet crooks of all kinds would do well not to underestimate the infamous amateur detective. In this collection of Dorothy L. Sayers short stories, Lord Peter is joined by Sayers’s other celebrated sleuth, the travelling salesman Montague Egg.

These twelve stories see Lord Peter and Montague Egg face a startling range of villains and mysteries. In ‘The Case of the Fourth Dimension’ Lord Peter must assist a man who is haunted by his own reflection, and in ‘The Incredible Elopement of Lord Peter Wimsey’, he briefly sheds his detective persona to become a magician – complete with robes, incantations and performing cats – all in order to rescue a woman caught in a horrifying trap. Montague Egg must defend the reputation of his employers in ‘The Poisoned Dow ’08’, when it appears that a rogue bottle of port has led to a violent death.

Rather like her aristocratic hero, Sayers’s writing is deceptively light, dazzling with expertly drawn characters and charming wit, while hinting that darker currents move just beneath the surface. Frequently celebrated as one of the greats of golden age crime, Sayers was a prolific writer, with the endlessly popular Lord Peter starring in 12 novels and numerous short stories. From 1949 to 1957, Sayers was President of the Detection Club, a position also held by such luminaries as G. K. Chesterton and Agatha Christie.

Produced in series with the 2017 Folio edition of Lord Peter Views the Body, this edition features an abundance of lively illustrations from artist Paul Cox, and an elegant binding in blue and silver.
