The Book Illustration Competition 2018 Judging Panel Announced

London, 13 December 2017: The Folio Society and House of Illustration announce that Helen Dorey joins the judging panel for the 2018 Book Illustration Competition (#BIC2018).

Reknowned Sherlock Holmes expert Helen Dorey is to be the guest judge for the 2018 Book Illustration Competition. Helen is an enthusiastic Holmesian who has served as a Council Member of the Sherlock Holmes Society of London and is invested in the world’s oldest Sherlock Holmes Society, The Baker Street Irregulars of New York.

Helen said: ‘It’s a great honour to have been asked to join the judging panel and I anticipate a wide range of amazing responses to the challenge of illustrating Holmes for a new generation.’

She will be joining five other judges on the panel: Sheri Gee, Folio Society Art Director; Colin McKenzie, Director of House of Illustration; James Rose, Folio Society Editor; Olivia Ahmed, House of Illustration Curator and 2017 competition winner Darya Shnykina.

Colin Mckenzie said: ‘I’m particularly excited to see how illustrators will respond to the challenge of illustrating such perennially popular stories as these and am delighted that the judging panel will be joined by Helen Dorey as such an authority on Sherlock Holmes.’

Now in its eighth year, the Book Illustration Competition is a partnership between The Folio Society and House of Illustration. This year’s BIC will be open for entries until 17 January 2018 and judging will take place in the new year, with the winner of the 2018 competition revealed at an exclusive ceremony at House of Illustration in February 2018.

The winner will receive the prestigious commission worth £5,000. Five prizes of £500 each will be presented to the other shortlisted entries. The new edition of The Selected Adventures and Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes by Arthur Conan Doyle with illustrations by the winning artist will be published by The Folio Society in October 2018.

The annual international competition is open to illustrators over the age of 18, both student and professional, who have not been previously commissioned by The Folio Society. Illustrators can visit, where they will find all the necessary details to enter.

The selected long list will be available to view on the House of Illustration website from 1 February 2018 where members of the public will be able to vote for their favourite entry.
